Ca and P Levels in ESRD Patients and the Evaluation of a Patient Education

Abstract
The patient¢¥s knowledge for medication and the compliance with drug is critically significant in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. So department of pharmacy in Seoul National University Hospital, patients education has been conducted for these objectives. To evaluate the effect of ESRD patients education, we measured, in 28 chronic renal failure or ESRD patients with abnormally high phosphorus level, serum calcium (Ca) and serum phosphorus (P) as indices of medication compliance. The mean calcium levels improved significantly after the patients education (p=0.049), but the mean phosphorus levels didn¢¥t (p=0.082). Although these were no significant difference in phosphorus change scores, the patients in this study were all having difficulty in controlling their phosphorus. In conclusion, ESRD patients¢¥ education by pharmacist can have an effect on patient¢¥s knowledge and compliance. Additionally ongowing teaching and encouragement for adherence to the medical prescription in patient¢¥s are needed in the future, continuously.
